Progress and thought on the Non-Profit Helpers project

Mailing list screenshots

I have put up a couple screenshots of the mailing list portion of the toolset. It is pretty slick if I do say so myself.

Screenshot one is the listing screen. The little red flags are items that have been changed(you can edit on the fly like excel and the little flag tells you that the cell has been changed. I have an example of editing one thread now. You will also see you cna sort by columns and flip through pages of people.

There is also a filter by last name.

I will add a couple more fields (let me know which ones you want) and do some more work as this gets closer ot finished.

Screenshot two is the add new person screen. Again, I will add more fields. You can add one at a time, or do a bulk import of a csv/Excel file, that is the tricky part still to be done. That was after you have a lot of people at an event you can load them all at once.

Right now I am not planning a mailing/newsletter function per se, but I might be convinced otherwise depending on time. You will certainly have the ability to export (and re-import) the list.

Search for a cause

I found a great site this morning for searching. The tool is no different (yahoo) than any other, but the idea is fantastic. Goodsearch.com helps non profits earn money while the user searches. You pick a non profit (and can register yours) and every time you use the tool earn around a penny of income.

Quick things to do

While we work on the innards of the site (including making this a real blog) we found a great article on quick tips you should have on your site.

Since our next mini-project is the mailing list/newsletter functionality, which we will use for our own lists, and those lists will be very much usability related, this is espeically useful.

Happydonors.com has a checklist of simple things you can use to spruce up your site and keep people "listening."

By the way, you could sign up for the newsletter *cough*hint*cough*

Image tool to play with

We have put what will be the nonprofithelpers.com online image manipulation tool up for beta. What that means is you can feel free to use and test the tool.

You can use this tool to upload, crop, resize and add a border to your images. All of this is done online and you can grab your new image at the end of the process.

We have tried to make the tool as easy to use as possible, so if you are confused, please send us an email and we will take a look at how to improve it.

Feel free to use this as often as you like.

First Screenshots

We are happy to release the first screenshots of the admin tools for the free-website project. There is a lot more than this, and these will probably change before we release the product. There has been a lot of hard work thus far and these screens are just a sample of the pages completed.

You should be able to notice the approach we are taking with a clean lay out, easy instructions and general ease of use with the admin screens. Our target person is still someone who does not have a technical background, and we are keeping that in mind as we build the tools those people will use to keep things up to date.

Non-Profit orgs need non-profit tools

There are a handful or so of "free websites to nonprofits" but, unless you know what a CGI-bin is or want to learn to program and design your own pages your site will likely end up looking unprofessional and be more of a pain than a useful tool. I have often seen this turn into content getting stale, for months, even years. Stale content looks like your organization isn't trying and doesn't do anything.

Non-Profit Helpers is building website tools for people who run non-profits. We are not a content system where you can drop anything in on any page and hope it works out, instead the tools are based on non-profit needs, sections and pre-structured areas that fit what non-profits focus on. you can have your website using tools you don't have to be technical to use.

Want to list your BOD? You don't need to learn to program that. Make and maintain a mailing list, easy, want to export that for a mail merge, also easy, want to search on that and update it, even better. No need to have a technical person on staff or on call every time a press release goes out.

No, it isn't perfect, free never is, but you will get what you need to tell people who you are and say what you need to. And yes, you can even get a few of those custom pages if you want to because every non-profit is different.

Websites are not something that nonprofits focus on. Website priority is well behind grants, donors and day to day operations, your website should be headache free and easy to use and update.

Websites are important though, people use the web to research to find your group, so learn more about you. A good website can turn a fence-sitter into a donor or volunteer. We are making the tools so that you don't have to worry about your website, yet you still have one to be proud of.

For more information email info@nonprofithelpers.com and we can give you updates as we are ready to launch. And keep checking this space for updates and tips for organizing your information.
